PRESS RELEASE - GREENPEACE PARAGLIDER INCIDENT AT TURNBERRY
"The Scottish Hang-gliding and Paragliding Federation (SHPF) condemns the violation of airspace committed by a Greenpeace protester on Friday 13th July in Ayrshire. Powered paraglider pilots are subject to air law, which is there to protect them and other aircraft. To violate airspace risks midair collision and is illegal and highly irresponsible. It also brings the sport of paragliding into disrepute.
Paragliders in Scotland take their legal obligations and responsibilities very seriously. A great deal of training and coaching is undertaken to keep pilots aware of airspace restrictions and pilots' legal responsibilities. It is highly regrettable that the actions of one individual may have damaged the good reputation of powered paragliders in Scotland."
PRESS RELEASE ENDS
The Scottish Hang-gliding and Paragliding Federation (SHPF) is the Scottish umbrella organisation working with the regional paragliding clubs across Scotland. It is a wholly non-political organisation.
Powered paragliders are different from normal paragliders in that they carry an engine powered propeller on their back, which allows them much more control in ascent and low level flight. Powered paraglider pilots make up a very small percentage of the paragliding community in Scotland.
Airspace law applies to all aircraft and is overseen by the Civil Aviation Authority.
